Three examples of the Missionary Magazine are presented in this comparison.
The magazine is currently presented as Searchable Image PDF (formerly referred to as PDF Image plus Text). These PDF files were created with 300 dpi bitonal TIFF files, G4-compressed, using Textbridge conversion software. The images were not enhanced before conversion.
The first step in preparing the DjVu comparison files was to enhance (clean up) the images using FirstPage image software from James Rile Associates. The margin areas were white-filled, the images were deskewed and despeckled, and additional marks and blemishes were removed using the rapid manual cleanup features of FirstPage.
The next step was to convert the images to multipage DjVu files.
The final step was to OCR and sepia-tone the images using proprietary software from James Rile Associates.
The result is DjVu files that are only 14% of the size of the PDF files. Most of the size reduction is attributable to the superior JB2 compression method of DjVu, but some of the reduction (probably about 11%) is attributable to the image cleanup, which eliminated unnecessary black pixels from the image files.
